Marcia Wallace
Emmy Award-winning actress best known from "The Bob Newhart Show" & breast cancer survivor
Prior to her Emmy award winning role as Bart's teacher on "The Simpsons," Marcia Wallace was best known as Carol Kester on "The Bob Newhart Show" and reprised that role when she guest starred as "Murphy Brown's" 66th secretary, for which she received an Emmy nomination.
Wallace's voice has been heard on several animated series, films and commercials, and she has also guest starred on such shows as "Murder, She Wrote;" "Magnum, PI;" and "Taxi." Her stage credits include the role of Olive Madison in the female "Odd Couple," as well as roles in "Same Time Next Year," "Supporting Cast," "Plaza Suite," "Gypsy," "Born Yesterday," all three roles in "Last of the Red Hot Lovers," and most recently as Ouiser in "Steel Magnolias." Wallace has also hosted nationally televised comedy clubs, has appeared as a guest host on talk shows around the country, and has hosted her own show, "Do or Diet," on cable.
In 1985, following "a feeling that something was wrong," Wallace made an appointment with her doctor. A mammogram showed a small lump, and a biopsy revealed it to be malignant. The cancer was localized, so Wallace opted for a lumpectomy and radiation. As a breast-cancer survivor, Wallace travels around the country offering breast cancer education and speaking on a variety of topics, most especially the importance of humor and laughter in facing life's challenges. Her speech shares the title of the book she has authored: "Don't Look Back, We're Not Going That Way."
